Older homes
Roots and ageing pipework in a heritage town
Like other historic towns in Central Victoria, Kyneton has plenty of homes and buildings with original or partly original drainage. Clay and earthenware sewer pipes, older stormwater lines and a mix of materials from later renovations are all common.
Established trees are often the deciding factor. Their roots can enter ageing joints and gradually choke a line, causing slow drains, gurgling fixtures and overflows at the gully trap. High-pressure jetting cuts the roots back and flushes them out, restoring flow through the pipe. Where roots keep returning, a camera inspection shows which joints are letting them in, which is useful if you are considering repairs down the track. Heritage buildings in town can also have long drainage runs, so it helps to know where the access points are before we arrive.
Make the trip count
Planning a visit to Kyneton
Because Kyneton is further out, it makes sense to get as much done as possible in one visit. When you call, tell us about every drainage issue on the property, not just the most pressing one. A slow sewer, an overflowing downpipe and a drain that keeps blocking can often be looked at together.
We can combine drain jetting in Kyneton with a CCTV inspection, so you finish the visit knowing what caused the problem and what condition the pipes are in. Where a fault needs pinning down, our electromagnetic locator tracks the camera's signal to mark its position and depth.
A clear description helps too. Let us know which fixtures are affected, whether the problem is getting worse and whether the gully outside is overflowing, so we can come prepared.
If it's urgent
What to do while you wait
If a sewer blocks and water starts backing up, there are a few sensible steps to take before help arrives:
- stop running taps, showers, the dishwasher and the washing machine to reduce flow into the line
- avoid flushing toilets if the water is rising in the bowl
- check the overflow relief gully outside and keep its grate clear, as it is there to let sewage overflow outdoors rather than inside the home
- if neighbours have the same problem or sewage is in the street, contact Coliban Water, as the fault may be in their main
If wastewater is coming up inside, keep children and pets away from it and avoid contact where you can. Our emergency blocked drains page explains more about urgent help, which is available 24/7.
Maintenance
Staying ahead of root regrowth
Roots that have been cut back will usually grow again if the pipe still has gaps for them to enter. For Kyneton properties with a history of root blockages, booking maintenance jetting ahead of time is often a better approach than waiting for the next emergency, particularly given the travel involved.
Stormwater deserves the same forward planning. Kyneton generally has cooler, wetter winters than Bendigo, so blocked downpipes, leaf-filled pits and silted pipes tend to make themselves known in the colder months. Clearing them before winter sets in is one of the easiest jobs to schedule ahead.
